  •  Meh, I disagree (3+ / 0-)

This is no different then a recovering alcoholic speaking to a group of high schoolers about the dangers of taking too many keg stands. If she is truly taking a stand and using her publicity for public good, than awesome and good for her.

However, the later part of your diary, where she is raking in 250K, now there you have a point. Borderline fraud, in my opinion.

I just wished diarists here would focus on what's important rather than what isn't.

    •  Difference is, Bristol isn't ordered to address (2+ / 0-)

highschoolers by a judge, as part of her community service requirement

Not all recovering alcoholics are criminals.

One could name a hundred different examples of people who erred in their life and they would like to see others from making the same mistake. The Marlboro man spoke at my Highschool. We had people come who were HIV positive to talk about drug use, or pre marital sex.

I just think it's petty. If she wants to help people, than that is awesome and we should see past her mother's politics. However, if she's engaging in fraud, then the diary should be about her fraudulent activities and not about her trying to help people.

even if she is not engaging in something that can be deemed "fraud," I doubt the veracity any motivations that might be attributed to altruism or responsibility..

I have no problem with discounting her as an insincere opportunist.

and I think it has merit, but I don't think it matters so long as good from her actions, and I strongly believe in giving people the benefit of the doubt. Even if their genetics would tell a different story.

More to your point though, this seems to be simply a way to either avoid taxation in some way or for her parents to channel her funds without them paying gift taxes. Either way, I think it's fraudulent.

services rendered for the expenses to the 'charity.'

Regardless as to whether you or I would consider it a value for the money, there's plenty of supposed "good works" which occur under a false flag (say, 70-95% of Congressional effort?), which cannot be prosecuted as fraud.

... media whore mining notoriety for big bucks, while an AA member will shun publicity. Also, we won't accept payment for a speaking engagement but under rare circumstances, reimbursement of modest expenses might be accepted.

Service to others is a key component of all 12 Step programs. We are willing & grateful to do such work because it helps maintain our own sobriety.
