  •  Don't you be dissin' the IRS workers! (3+ / 0-)

Honestly, I have always been more than pleasantly surprised by the help I've received whenever I have contact with an IRS employee... they're the best (in my view).

A quick example.  I worked at a place where we spent a couple of years developing a custom piece of machinery which was supposed to enter limited production (twenty units total).  They built the first two; we spent many months getting things ready for production; and then management decided to cancel the project and destroy the machinery for tax purposes (can't afford the depreciation, according to my manager).  This seemed like a load of crap to me, so I called up the IRS and started talking to a business consultant.  I wondered if we could call those first two machines "prototypes" and then consider their cost as an immediate expense (avoiding future depreciation).  The IRS guy thought this was a good question and got all excited and said "Yes, if you file an amended return... you should be able to do that."  So, the next department meeting when my manager said that we needed to destroy the machines, I said "No you don't".  He challenged my position... "Says who?"  "Says the IRS."

Now, let's bring this thread back to something a bit more current.  I believe that every additional IRS auditor generates a couple mllion bucks in extra revenue.  The GOPers say they want to reduce the deficit... Easy!  Hire more IRS auditors!  But does your average GOPer really want to do that?  Nope... and maybe they're really not serious about reducing the deficit.

    Don't be a DON'T-DO... Be a DO-DO!

    •  My experience with the IRS in person (0+ / 0-)

has always been that they are courteous, professional, and human. I got dinged really badly a long time ago because I fell for a non-deductible scam, and thought I could deduct it. But the IRS was right. And they treated me decently.

On the other hand, my telephone experience with them has varied a lot.

I second Rachel's (and others') notion that Rethugs don't believe in government, and wish to discredit it. If they can cripple the IRS and the Post Office, they will, and when the IRS and Post Office fail in their missions, they will have proven that government can't work.
