      ...I am going to make myself some baked ziti on Tuesday for my unbirthday!


      I've been wanting baked ziti for months now.  Haven't had it in years.  I could really use a North Jersey-style old school red sauce Italian restaurant for times like these.  Ha.

      Actually, I've never been to DeNicola's right up on Powell.  36th-ish.  Looks like it may fit the bill.  You ever been there?  Reviews look average at best.  Hmmmm.  Always seems to be packed, lots of families.  I always walk right past on the way home from my taco truck, before cutting back into the 'hood through the fortress of strip clubs that surrounds it.  Heh.

        I was not too impressed. It is the type of Italian restaurant in a stereotypical spaghetti & meatballs kind of way. But then again I have not experienced North Jersey/NYC style Italian so maybe it is good. I think I had their gnocchi and it was decent. But man the red checkered plastic tablecloths just screamed tacky and 80's to me.

        You know who has excellent Italian food is Sylvia's. I've never actually been there but I used to treat myself to delivery from there through Delivered Dish (is that still around?). Oh and the place on like 27th &SE Ankeny just off Burnside. Il Piatto or something like that. Rustic Northern Italian food is how they describe it.

        My other favorite Italian place is gone now unfortunately. Il Fornaio. Used to be just off W. Burnside on 22nd. They had a nice bakery on-site and you could make a meal out of just the wonderful bread basket with olive oil for dipping!

          ...Delivered Dish is still around.  I've never used it, though.  Website looks like it works.

          I know that place on Ankeny, haven't been there yet.  I came across it for the first time a couple of years ago when I was working a Sunday Parkways event -- thanks for the reminder, I had forgotten all about wanting to eat there one of these days!  Menu looked good.

          Thanks for the note on DeNicola's - red-checkered table cloths!  Ha, yeah that's exactly the kind of place I'm talking about.  Of course, the food could still be a problem though, but tacky & 80s is actually a good start for a place like that...

        A "North Jersey-style old school red sauce" is properly referred to as "gravy."

        I'm originally from Philly, and that's how we (culinarily speaking) roll in da hood.
