    One can eat the healthiest diet in the world and not lose weight because of hidden, underlying problems.

      Before any candidate for bypass gets the operation, they are told to drink lots of water and eat very little. And guess what? They lose weight!
      I've always wondered how they can follow a pre-bypass diet and not see that a diet will, indeed, help them lose weight.
      And, as you point out, if a bypass reduces food consumption, and the person loses weight, then a diet will work as well.
      If, as the diarist contends, "some people can't lose weight" then a bypass shouldn't help them either.
