  •  I recently left the employ of a legacy family. (9+ / 0-)

The scion availed himself of over a million dollars in medicare services in 3 years and got hearing aids, glasses and CT scans at the VA, because it was all "free" (in spite of the fact tha he also had a conciege Dr. in Beverly Hills on the side).
He always bitched about how much his supplemental plan cost.
The guy has hundreds of millions. No joke.

...I married into a very wealthy family and am myself in the top 2% of earners.

But unlike my father-in-law, who whines about every last cent he pays in taxes, I think people like us ought to be paying a hell of a lot more. After all, even with all the expenditures on social welfare programs, we still derive grossly disproportionate benefits from the services the government provides.

And, in any case, I don't want to be the kind of person who seems to think wealth accumulation is a game, with he who dies with the most being declared the winner. I'd much rather be the kind of person who uses what I have to make things better for the people in the world around me.

Do you suppose Republican politicians hate people who work for a living because they've never done it themselves?

that there really are folks in that top 2% who have a heart and a mind and a sense of fairness.  I wish more of them would speak up about the others.  Maybe some truth coming from "their own kind" would penetrate the greed, or at least shame them a little.  Ok, I'm an optimist....
So much of what's wrong in the country these days is that "whoever dies with the most toys wins" attitude that permeates the top.   What that attitude really is is about the same as the average three year old.
I like your sig line...very true!

I will sing you a song no one sang to me, you can be anybody that you want to be

If everyone in the top 2% saw reality the way you do, we wouldn't have much of a deficit issue to contend with in the first place.
I don't forget that among the reasons for the faltering economy would be upper class support for the wars fought by working/middle class sons and daughters to protect their moneyed U.S. hegemony abroad, nor the wall street/banking industry types who are happy to screw the little guy for front loaded profit taking schemes.
        Hats off to you.
