  •  No need to wait..for some reason Jed decided (20+ / 0-)

to not include the next words (not literally) out of Carney mouth.

Carney said Monday that Obama wants Congress to send him a debt limit bill that doesn't include spending cuts or other budget items. But he stopped short of saying Obama would veto the legislation if Congress didn't comply.

That not calling their bluff.  It is showing your hand right after your hand is dealt, before any bets are made.

Wake me when the kabuki is over and we are actually talking about a legitimate threat from the WH.

    •  Think it is time to clear the decks with this (10+ / 0-)

I think it's time to start suggesting that by failing to raise the debt ceiling the GOP would be giving Obama the power to decide what government payments were going to immediately stop, like, say, oil royalties and subsidies, corporate tax credits and loopholes, tax offshore deposits, military contractor payments, conglomerate farm subsidies, etc.

The Treasury decides that means with the President!   So after the debt interest payments!  Hmmmm

      •  LOL, doc. Wouldn't that be rich? It might be (2+ / 0-)

worth voting against just to see the "oh shit" look on Boehner's face.

The community of fools might be small if it were not such an accomplished proselytizer.

I don't think there is any question by anyone in the Obama administration that they will make interest payments on the national debt the first priority if there is no increase in the debt ceiling. When you have debt of $14 Trillion that you have to manage, and rollover a portion of it on a daily basis, you cannot be in default. That would be suicidal. As you noted it will be the Obama administration's decision and he will make the decision that is in the best interest of the country and that will be to pay the interest and honor any debt obligations that come due.

        "let's talk about that"

he'd veto any extension of the tax cuts for the rich.

Like others, I'll  believe it when I see it.

And why the fuck didn't Obama take a (sorta) stand on this from the beginning of the debt ceiling business?  Why now?

But if he fails to call the repubs bluff on this, he will not be reelected.  This is BS.  The repubs are NOT going to risk crashing the global economy, and the stock market, and all the financial institutions, etc., et al.

He must call their bluff!  We cannot give these thugs unlimited opportunities to hijack this country and its government.  I believe there are enough sane repubs who understand what an incredible disaster this would be, and what the impact on their party and their own lives would be.

        •  He can only fail to call their bluff if he caves. (2+ / 0-)

If history is any guide he will.  One negotiating tactic that the Repubs are using is the "crazy guy."  If the other side  believes you are crazy enough to do the worst, they are more likely to compromise.

will protect them if they screw with the profits and investments of their financial overlords.  They will be toast.  It ain't gonna happen.  Still, that does not mean that Obama won't gave, for no good reason at all; merely to keep that impulse flexed and exercised.

but it may scare Obama enough to cave.  Frankly, I think what's going on now is likely to influence the 2012 election.  Could be a turning point.  Which direction depends on what Obama does with it.

        •  He will not be re-elected (0+ / 0-)

          under any circumstances.

In fact, I do not see a scenario by which Barack Obama will be re-elected.

I certainly won't vote for him under any conditions and I went to high school with several of his highest placed advisors.

Nope, sorry, he is not getting in again.

          He should resign.

          Now.
