I sort of enjoyed The Fountainhead too, and greatly admire Wright's work.  Recently I watched a DVD about Fallingwater, turns out Wright and his client disagreed about how much steel to put in the cantilevered concrete slabs that are the design's hallmark.  The client consulted an engineering firm and they agreed that the concrete needed much more steel reinforcement than Wright called for.  After much arguing, Wright agreed to compromise, installing more steel than he wanted but less than the engineers specified.  Of course, after about a year the concrete began sagging, and recently it was reinforced at huge expense to save the building.

I found that a great indictment of the hubris and fantasy of Rand's "great man" philosophy.  Sure, Wright was a genius, but he didn't know everything, and not only was he a fool for believing he did, others paid the price for his foolishness.

I daytripped out there from Baltimore one summer with an academic friend working on a well-funded research project centered on Wright. Watching her & her expense account go through the bookstore/giftshop like Sherman through Georgia was worth the price of admission all by itself--

But I digress. Here's the story:

On the way back we stopped for supper in a little roadside joint just before reentering Maryland. After the meal we met the owner of the place, who as it happened had retired from HVAC contracting in the area.

When we told him we'd been out to Fallingwater he said he'd been called out there once to repair a water heater which was part of the original equipment. The device was beyond salvaging, but when they went about replacing it, they discovered that the doorway, as designed by the illustrious Frank Lloyd Wright, was too narrow for the old unit to fit through--it had to be cut up for removal. (I suppose it had been put in place & the room built around it.) Go figger.

Apparently the there has always been an unhealthy black mold problem at Fallingwater. Long before Wright, it was known that water = high humidity = mold = respiratory problems.
