the 2010 Trusees Report lists the various Trust Fund balances under the related programs.  The total is closer to the $2.6.   But the other Trust Funds under those programs are a bit of a different story as are the trust funds that make up the rest of the Intergovernmental debt like those for Military Retirement, Civil Service Retirement, Foreign Service Retirement, Unemployment Insurance, Railroad Workers Retirement, etc.

They are all 'real' obligations, notwithstanding their essential similarities to the SSA Trust Fund as a "debt to ourselves", but their historic funding and long-term projecctions involve a variety of factors that make it simpler to leave them out of this particular analysis.

We'd rather dream the American Dream than fight to live it or to give it to our kids. What a shame. What an awful, awful shame.
