  •  In the East, they just turn the turbines off (0+ / 0-)

and let the water flow.   In NY State, in particular, the sales are primarily local, as opposed to to the grid.  Wind power will never supplant hydro in the East, because rivers always flow, but the wind doesn't always blow.

If you lose your disc or fail to follow commands, you will be subject to immediate de-resolution. That will be all.

    •  Wind power, like natural gas, is where you find it (2+ / 0-)

And it is as equally transportable and storable. Just takes a different tool kit in distribution and storage.

Interestingling, windpower and natural gas deposits in US are in the same places, the central US from North Dakota to Texas.

As for "In the East", NY is in the heart of "the East" and has 25 GW windpower potential. Oregon, heart of the NW, has 27 GW.  That is 25% of NY's total electrical need could be windpower supplies. Oregon has a 20 GW surplus. This is where national power grid comes into play in helping balance.  Oregon power moves to middle states. Middle states power moves East to NY.

For good information on windpower potential in US, try

Overall, using the highest potential windpower sites in the US could provide 20% of US electrical power. Eliminating ALL US oil use for power, about 5% of all US oil use and reducing need for fracturing for natural gas which is a much more environmentally damaging process as this diary notes.

    •  Let these frackers keep it up (0+ / 0-)

until an earthquake changes the course of the river...
