    And it's worth a separate diary--I encourage you to write it. That is: what kind of world are we going to live in in which the owners of media sites believe that the model that we should live in is one where creators are not compensated.

    One of my favorite things about the copyright clause in the Constitution is that it emphasizes the progress of arts and sciences as a goal--not profit:

    Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 of the United States Constitution,
    “To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries.

    That's what creativity is about.

      why is the author of an essay on politics, polemical in nature, entitled to copyright protection at all?  

      I don't think Arianna Huffington's main flaw is overly deferential respect for copyright law -- doesn't she copy wholesale from the New York Times, pushing fair use to its breaking point, or else treating links as "compensation?"  I don't read it; but I can also distinguish between real picket lines and phony ones.  I'm striking against Celestial Seasonings Herbal Tea.  BOOM.
