  •  A union that (0+ / 0-)

doesn't have the support of the workers is not a union.

What's to prevent a couple of conservative employees of Google from declaring themselves a union, going on strike, and picketing Mountain View to redress the "grievance" of domestic-partner benefits for same-sex partners? Your principled stance would suggest that until those workers' grievances are satisfied (which would undoubtedly result in grievances from LGBT workers), progressives would need to stop signing on to their Gmail.
You can't just "declare yourself a union". A union is a legal entity. It'd be like declaring yourself a non profit organization--unless you meet the legal requirements, the IRS will not be swayed.

In your example, Google is free to fire these guys, or call the police and have them removed from company property, or simply ignore them. Why? Because they are not a union. They are not covered by a collective bargaining agreement. They are two guys out in front of the building with signs.

I don't know how many of the writers and contributors to HuffPo are members of the two unions that are calling for this action. The diary says hundreds; maybe Jonathan has a more exact count.

There's no doubt that the Newspaper Guild and the National Writer's Union are legitimate, legally recognized unions, though.
