    Rep. McDermott, you are one of the people left in the Congress who can still think about the entire social picture, including the help necessary for those that a capitalist system almost by necessity leaves behind in order that a another group can get as far ahead as unrestrainted greed can allow.  I am going to ask you a question that will be hard for you to answer on a public blog, but maybe a nuanced answer will do.

    As I watch all these Congressional Repub conservatives dismantle the social safety net and open the door to unregulated, unrestrainted capitalism as our savior, I must ask you what kind of people are they for the most part?  Are they:

    Just greedy capitalists that want to allow great wealth for a few of their kind at the expense of everyone else or;

    True believers in pure capitalism as the best way to help everyone in this country to do better and be secure or;

    Are they religious zealots blindly following some dogmatic path set out for them?

    I would appreciate any insight you have into the mindset of your majority colleagues in Congress, as to my eye, it is uncanny how they refused to learn anything from the past suffering and failures of our society!

    Political censorship is the root of all evil! It is the antithesis to a functional democracy!!

      Dear Truthbetold,  It is too easy to say that All Republicans are greedy.  The fact is that some are but most , for a variety of reasons, actually believe that we are better off if we all take care of ourselves.  I have no  quarrel with that idea but IT SIMPLY DOESN'T WORK.  My grandparents worked hard and did their best but they never had enough to set aside a nest egg for the retirement.  They Couldn't do it for themselves so FDR In 1935 said, " lets do this together for the common good."   The far right for lots of reasons has either not had the experience or the requisite empathy to feel the need to be "our brothers's keeper" so it is tough to convince them sometimes but keep up the effort. I will .jim
