  •  So what is his plan, then? (16+ / 0-)

Where will he send these kids for their education? And where will the kids at the school for the deaf end up?

These kinds of schools are the GOOD kind of charter - the kind where an innovative strategy is used to help kids that are not being served appropriately/adequately/to their highest potential get a great education that will allow them to lead productive, happy lives.

    •  basically, charter schools for (10+ / 0-)

very specific populations like this can be useful because regular schools are not set up to handle childcare, or curriculum to serve the deaf, etc.

When a charter school is applied to a general population, we start to see problems and low performance. Charter schools for general populations that succeed tend to look suspiciously like regular schools, except with more money.

      •  I also don't mind charter schools (9+ / 0-)

with a specific community-driven purpose. We have some locally that are really very interesting, and all grassroots created. One is for homeschoolers - a serious need in a rural area like this where some kids are over an hour from the nearest school, on roads that may not be passable in heavy weather. One is a Waldorf methods school; few things make my heart gladder than watching 2nd grade boys learn to knit. They're meant to serve kids that aren't being served by an ordinary school in a clear way.

Schools for the extra geeky, magnet schools, those are fine with me too.

What frosts me is when they're set up by outsiders with a for-profit company, or when they appear to be set up specifically for the purpose of damaging the original school in some way. And I think there needs to be recognition that a school for the extra geeky will work great for the extra geeky, and probably be a horrible place for a more ordinary child - regardless of the average test scores of the two schools.

    •  The thugs (GOP) don't care what happens (5+ / 0-)

Let the moms and their kids turn into crackheads and murder each other.
Why bother with the deaf? They can beg as effectively as any of the other homeless.

These people do not care about possible victims any more than Qaddafi does. In their dreams, they are sending air strikes over Detroit.

I hope my frankness does not insult anyone, but I do think our rulers are that cold blooded.
