  •  That the city might have been trying to sell it (18+ / 0-)

to private developers wouldn't be any better, far as I'm concerned. For years we've been fighting a "public-private" golf and ski real estate development that would monopolize a public ski mountain and park within the Catskill forest preserve, forever. The currently-very family-friendly and rustic (and affordable) would be married to a private, high end timeshare condo-golf course-spa behemoth, with lifts and artificial snow-making provided at taxpayer expense! No longer a rustic, affordable park amenity where families can afford to ski.

My suspicion is the benton Harbor project is likely just another taxpayer-funded boondoggle, like a sports stadium, intended to monotize and privatize an irreplaceable public asset--Michigan lake shore and dunes--and displace "less desirable" people.

The result is all too often to degrade the shore, place the park out of the reach of poor citizens who had unfettered access to it previously, and enrich some politically-connected real estate boys.
    We call it developer welfare.

Sorry, this is a bee in my bonnet for sure.

Okay, the Government says you MUST abort your child. NOW do you get it?

this development plan was a reason for the takeover.

      1. If the city was making the plans itself, likely not and

      2. Granholm was the one in April 2010 who actually started the Emergency Financial Manager process for Benton Harbor and appointed Harris as the financial manager...the same guy who is currently the emergency financial manager.

The more I'm looking at this golf resort issue, the more it's a red herring distracting from a far more relevant issue...that the new laws are designed to pretty much crush unions.

I don't think this is about selling off public lands to private developers.

who didn't swoon with joy at the words "public-private partnership."
