Helps gain perspective on the situation in Detroit.

But it does sound like this crisis of declining school population is being used, a la Shock Doctrine, to impose conditions that go beyond merely dealing with strict fiscal issues.  For instance, closing the school for teen un-wed mothers, who are doubtless mostly AA, smells like a chance to punish these mothers for their bad choices, rather than assist them, which falls right into wingnut memes of racism and anti-women's issues.

Thus the outrage being expressed in the comments.

Obviously some schools need to be closed, and teachers let go, because there are far fewer students to be served. Using this to punish and demean the most vulnerable is despicable, but to be expected, given the long history of racism in Michigan.  We should not be surprised that Benton Harbor and Detroit, both AA majority cities, are being targeted for these draconian measures.

    •  Pretty much every school in Detroit is mostly AA (6+ / 0-)

So this is kind of irrelevant.  All of the people involved (including Bob Bobb) are AA, so unlikely to be racist.

In addition, Bobb was appointed by a pro-choice Democrat female governor - Jennifer Granholm.

        •  There's a certain paranoid strain (0+ / 0-)

in the Democratic Party that believes that use of the word "Democrat" as an adjective is somehow a slur.

I've never understood the logic here - I've seen great big expositions on this but they've always struck me as similar to the numerological contortions that some of the Born Again loonies used to get "666" from Clinton's name and then claim that he was the anti-Christ.

In actual English (as opposed to the loony English that these people want us to speak) nouns can be used where we normally use adjectives in order to add greater emphasis to their meaning in the phrase.

Examples that come immediately to mind are "Cat Woman" and "Hell Boy".

In this case, of course, the key point that I am making is that Bobb was appointed by a pro-choice Democrat who is a female and was, at the time, governor.  Since key point here DEMOCRAT I used the noun form.

There's a sale on at Walmart for tin foil.  Better hurry before it's all gone!

grad school. One of my favorite places to be sent was the school for moms and children up to age 2. The girls  were definitely NOT mostly black. In fact, based on my familiarity with the schools they'd previously attended, I can tell you that they came from every socio-economic background in our city. Things have changed a lot since I was in high school almost 50 years ago, and schools for these moms is definitely one thing that's changed for the better. These girls deserve just to have just as much "extra" money spent on them to make their high school years successful as any school spends on  football and basketball programs for boys.

    •  So if the Public Schools don't have students (8+ / 0-)

Who is going to be attending these Charter schools? Seems that there's something missing here. Detroit is experiencing outflow of population, seems obvious the schools need to be sized to deal with the actual population. A painful process, no doubt, but what's this about trying to give these "excess" schools over to charter schools. Those schools need students, where are they coming from?
