  •  Incidentally - He was our replacement in Iraq. (3+ / 0-)

I just learned this about a week ago. In fact, some of the guys in my unit (in our S2 shop) actually worked with him and had to train him during RIP/TOA.

I got some very interesting insight from talking to them.

Read up on that data mining software he used to siphon information for Wikileaks (this is public information). Based on one of the things that was talked about (between me and the guy training him) he apparently was planning this the minute he arrived in Iraq. That's all I'm going to say on that one.

My initial impression of him based on news reports is quite different. I thought he was likely a lonely, depressed individual who was having trouble adjusting to military life - and that that played a role in his leaking.

As it turns out he was somewhat of a hothead. Just to give you one example, the guy I know was also training a female in his unit. As it turns out they want to AIT together (same MOS). The kid in my unit went through the ranks very fast, and is now a Sergeant.

He was a Specialist at the time, and she was a PFC (one rank lower). So.... at one point while he's going through procedures with her she says, "OK" to which he jokingly replied "OK, what? OK Specialist!" She laughed. The joke was two fold. First, that they were Privates together and friends, and now he outranks here. Second, Specialist is NOT considered high ranking. Hell, they're not even NCOs.

Even after she laughed about it Manning jumped up, "Don't talk to her like that!" and started acting like he wanted to fight.

Long before this whole controversy broke the guys in my S2 section were already saying, "This guy has issues" and apparently even the people in his unit knew it.

While I still think Manning is absolutely accountable for his actions, I also fault his unit for allowing him to work with classified material.

        •  Seemed like an impulse. (0+ / 0-)

          What else ?

But I'd be damned surprised if other people didn't grab off the same materials and do it smarter.

Invading servers for a memory-resident routine isn't that difficult when you've got root. I like the thumb drive route.

What I did forget to mention is that they said Manning was no doubt very intelligent, but nonetheless very unstable.

            •  Just sayin' that he's not the only freak. (0+ / 0-)

His limited access mitigates against the idea that he was the only person getting into these files.

Apparently the system failed to do content management -- an incompetence for anything I set up.

(We do a system for registering documents to comply with SOX and FRE. Nobody like Manning has a chance to grab doc's. That's part of why there's a registration system -- works with Oracle IM, for one -- and approvals.)

He had a top secret clearance and he had full access to SIPRnet. He was an Intel Analyst.

                •  Again, he's not the only one. (0+ / 0-)

That system could have been set up to be broken. Deliberately. Any ERP payroll or payables system has better security.

400,000+ people could have done what he did. Or augmented some bit that he grabbed later on. The collateral murder vid would have peaked interest in war crimes, all over.

When we got descriptions of SIPRnet, it seemed like the router level, itself, was done without identity management.
Sharing passwords is beyond stupid but having a single password to get direct access to the network -- pick a router port and it's yours -- that's a fail at Networking 101..

They've gone to detecting anomalies, after the fact. If you don't mind seeing IP theft then that's an approach. Clear, simple, and wrong... a la Mencken. I never trust the operating system interrupt system to report all of what is happening.

A guess: nobody anywhere near the top was either a competent coder or network architect/installer. Much less a database guy. They had no contact with NTAC or anybody else in the community. And no commercial check list. Hacks.

                •  I missed that users were able to run filters (0+ / 0-)

and pick up the results later.

That explains how the limited access could collect a sample that took branching through 800 servers and query result returns.

One Gaga CD could get packed with results from a dozen queries.

Goddamn they were stupid setting this up. We have to live with EU600 penalties for losing customer identity info -- fines into 5 figures per lost account. Never, never, never.....

        •  I'd have a hard time adjusting to this (0+ / 0-)

Baghdad, a few years later ...Manning, 'not adjusting'.

And what really gets me is that English (girl in pic above shown torturing political prisoners) has, what, 13 yrs total punishment? ...while Manning [who hasn't been tried yet and already has a year of solitary confinement under his belt] is facing much worse... for busting people like English.
