Until I read the Bible cover-to-cover as a young teen I was completely ignorant (or innocent, as they called it then.) Never heard of perversion until I started on the good book.

US energy corporations realize that both solar and wind power share one big drawback--they are free.

    •  I always tell homophobes (6+ / 0-)

Who start blathering about the "sin of Sodom" that they need to read about the Levite's concubine in the last chapter of Judges.  It's EXACTLY the same situation - guest is threatened with gang rape - only the Levite throws his concubine (common law wife is a better translation) to the rape gang.  She dies, he dismembers her body and sends parts to the other tribes, and all the men of Benjamin are wiped out in the ensuing civil war.  It's pretty grim, and was intended as a cautionary a) against lack of hospitality, just as in Sodom and b) the anarchy that ensues when there is no strong central government.

As the chapter ends:  "There was no king in Israel in those days.  Every man did as he pleased."

      •  It was that very story that made me an athiest. (6+ / 0-)

As a teenager I started reading the bible at the beginning. By the time I got through that story I was sick of the violence and sexism. I decided there were better ways to understand the world. I put the Bible down and studied science instead.

ay oh whey oh, walk like an Egyptian
