smutty.  They're not what the USSC would call obscene, but in an underhanded way they're worse -- they're a deliberate attempt to dirty-up Western fiction, not in the sexual sense but in the drag-it-through-the-mud sense, linguistically and politically. He got a freakin' Literary Prize for one of 'em, though. "Enlightenment," or some crap like that, applauding his "modernization" of Westerns. Committee felt, apparently, McMurtry's writing was the opposite of bowdlerization. So what do I know?

Well, I know what reading other authors and books taught me.
    The potty-mouthed poor-me attitudes of McMurtry's protagonists?
The literary equivalent of spray-painting graffiti on the LIncoln

Want to know about the West? Sure, read Lonesome Dove or Streets of Laredo or Comanche Moon.

But. Don't just read McMurtry. "Lonesome Dove" is as much BS as
is "City Slickers," just on paper instead of film. Don't just read Zane Grey or Louis L'Amour, either. Read Owen Wister for romance of the West.  Read Andy Adams for details of the trail drives. Read Andy Adams' "Log of a Cowboy" as a companion / contrast to Lonesome Dove or anything by Zane Grey.

Relying on fiction, either the romanticization of Owen Wister or the deliberate anti-romanticization of McMurtry, is denying yourself vital information -- factual information. But you have to be careful in reading the nonfiction, too, because a fair amount of it is pro-WASP "manifest destiny," which is BS of another kind.

Read Walter Prescott Webb and W.E.B. DuBois and Mike Cox (for the truth about the Texas Rangers, and then read Joaquin Jackson for the modern Rangers -- all those TV episodes Chuck Norris made were TV shows, folks {not to mention Walker was a Democrat}).

Sure, read the bios of Boone, Crockett, Houston, Travis, Chisum, Goodnight, Theodore Roosevelt, Ansel Adams, Georgia O'Keeffe.
The facts matter. Please take time to read about both sides, though.
Read the ranch histories of the XIT and  6666, the Matador and the Pitchfork. Read the bios of Sequoyah and Sitting Bull and Quanah Parker, too. Read "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee."

Don't believe everything you saw in "Dances With Wolves," eh?
