  •  Very true (4+ / 0-)

The essential thing to understand about Idaho is the state has always been cussedly independent. Self-reliance has always been a necessity here- the country is very beautiful, but very harsh, and most of the state is still lightly populated. Republicans and Democrats alike share these traits.

Go 40 miles outside of any of Idaho's major cities, and you are in wilderness. Cell phones often don't work, there are no services, and literally no one around for miles in any direction.

This  self-reliant, independent streak runs deep, but at the same time, Idahoans have become as inter-dependent as any other Americans. They count on social security, medicare and medicaid, and all the other institutions that are in place everywhere.

Idaho, for most of it's past, was much more moderate than it is now. Typically, Idahoans voted in a Governor from one party and a Legislature from the opposite party, with fairly strong minorities being represented in both houses.

but over the past 20 years or so, this has changed. While it's always easy to blame outsiders, in Idaho's case, this is partially true. We have had a steady influx of folks moving here from other states.
They come to take advantage of Idaho's low housing costs, the appreciation of the scenery, and the isolation. The cost of living here is often lower than other states, and the wages have been typically somewhat higher than other Intermountain states, except for Utah.

Idaho has become the New Montana for a lot of them- a very romantic  and idealized place. Lots of wealthy conservatives who buy hobby ranches, lots of conservative working people who want to get out of the big city. Lots of retirees who are still living in 1962.

These folks have escalated their immigration quite a lot after the 2008 election. It's hard to say what they think they are going to find, but for sure, it's not what most expect.

Right many are called, and damn few are chosen.
