  •  I'd never call for a hard fast rule (6+ / 0-)

because sometimes you just get excited and reply where ever.

That said, If you are a person who does not like replies in your tip jar- SAY SO IN YOUR TIP JAR. (Even a derp like me figured out how to edit my tip jar before publishing.) Readers can't read minds, only words, so tell 'em how you want comments.

    My preference?
Replies in my tip jar should be about problems in my diary (misspelled words, grammar wrecks, bad links, over-sized pictures, etc). Technical problems.

I prefer to see opinions and discussion about the topic outside the tip jar.

Since I haven't thought to say so in a tip jar, I don't mind how it went. In the future, I'll try to say how I want comments.

But, to each his own. So long as I am told, I will respect how a diarist wants comments posted in their diaries.

    •  Pretty much how I see it. (6+ / 0-)

Technical problems, random other stuff (of the "hey, I wanted to tell you" sort) -- and of course direct replies to anything within the tip jar comment itself.

Responses to the diary 'should' be posted directly to the diary itself, IMO. Just to keep the data-flow nice and tidy, y'know ;)

(Problem is, of course, with threadjacking. But that's really its own issue, and just because a common threadjack technique is 'posting toward the top' doesn't mean that 'posting towards the top' should be banned.)

after you fix those typos and other publishing issues, the diary comments still start with people pointing out things that are no longer issues.

      Here's an idea:

Give the diary author the option to move a comment from a tip jar reply to a normal diary comment.

If someone points out a typo, the author fixes it, and moves the tip jar reply to the bottom of the comment stack.

If a troll starts a flame war, or someone tries to hijack the diary by posting a reply to the tip jar, the author moves that comment (and everything attached to it) to the bottom of the comment stack.

The option would only be available to the diary author, and would only affect replies to the tip jar.

I would just add "fixed" as a comment after technical corrections or "Can't fix this &*^%@#% thing".

Being able to move comments around is
        1. work for programmers of the site (& they've enough hassles)

        2. Subject to its own abuses.

but mainly for the author of the diary, and no one would be forced to do it. Sure, it could be abused, but since only the author of the diary could make the change, everyone could see whether the author was playing games or not, and rec accordingly.

I'm not suggesting moving all comments around, btw, just changing the attachment of tip jar replies to make them diary comments instead.

Some programmers might see it as a hassle, others as job security.

          Just sayin'
