    ...still require electricity to be generated to power them and a concurrent massive increase in the size of the power grid and generation facilities.

    At this point, the sheer amount of power needed almost certainly means nuclear or natural gas even if we stopped making internal combustion engines today in favor of battery or fuel cells.

      I think it's better than the alternative.

      Population growth alone is going to mean increases in the size of the power grid and generation facilities, that's not going to change.

      Turning millions of cars, buses, trucks and whatnot into zero emissions while taking us off foreign oil and creating our own energy we can sell back to the world will be a game-changer ecologically AND economically.

      No one is suggesting that we will be completely switching over anytime soon.  

      This is just one more tool to move us away from oil dependency.  It can be used in areas that already produce ample electricity and have storage (the NW) and/or smog (CA) issues.
