I thought he was going to an FDR liberal, not Clinton 2.0.  The country didn't need another Clinton 2.0, they need another FDR (and still do).

I guess someone finally got through to him and said "kissing GOP ass isn't working.  Helping them kill Medicare isn't a good campaign slogan".

Nixon to be a Herbert Hoover conservative; they got Dwight Eisenhower without the integrity.  In 1970, it was not politically possible for Nixon to implement William F Buckley and Barry Goldwater's dreams to turn the US into an Ayn Rand paradise.  Do you think that Nixon would have implemented an EPA on his own

However, he was able to begin to lay the bridgework to move the country in that direction, and start to set the public discourse to one that pointed out what he, Buckley and other conservatives considered to be the excesses of liberalism.

He also nurtured the careers of people like Rumsfeld, Buchanan and Cheney, who worked in different ways to chip away what social progressives accomplished from the time of FDR until the end of the 70s.

It is the same way today in a mirror image, and I think we are doing it.  Obama is pushing back as much as he can possibly do in this political environment, but it is up to us to help him move the political discourse away from Nixon's bridge.

Noam Chomsky called Nixon the last liberal president.  I think that Obama in the end will be known as the last conservative president.

It's about time I changed my signature.
