seem to have largely been swept under a rug. The damage done by our ancestors, mine included, with African slavery ripples down through history. We as a nation took a gut shot when we finally had to face the fact we could not shout our "principles" to the world about "freedom" and "equality" while holding a significant population of our own fellow citizens in anything but those principles.

Necessary, but the damage of doing the necessary was severe and we are still seeing it daily in absolute idiocy and a sharp decline in our nation's ability to compete in the world.

Aside from this issue of the creation of American madrassas consider the real effect of merging two separate and very unequal school systems over much of the nation. Do not forget the close correlation of TP/gop ideology with regions and areas most effected, including some cities firmly in the North.

The African American separate and unequal school personnel were probably some of the most dedicated teachers one could find anywhere. They did not have a fraction of the support their white contemporaries had. Their colleges were not equal in state support. They "made do" at third world levels in place after place. Ever seen photos of the "Colored school" in some of those places? Tar paper shacks in some cases.

Then within the space of a bit over a decade came the forced merging of systems. A lot of those dedicated, but less "qualified" people from the Colored system got shoved around and even out. In many areas voter support evaporated for public schools. After all, "I'm paying the Academy, why should I support those awful black public schools?" had lots of traction. Go look at a rural "Black Belt" county system in Georgia, Alabama or Mississippi and you will almost certainly find damn few whites in the actual public system and that system is again damned unequal in public support, getting the bare legal necessity. Yep, same old thing of incredibly dedicate people struggling through.

Integration in many a place, all over the country, was an earthquake and we are still seeing its effects in a population of whites that fled to fundamentalist, right wing, anti-science and anti-integration indoctrination centers. And African Americans often still struggling with far less that equal support in public schools.

Obama's election was a flower blooming in the winter of a racist past and present--but only a flower. Spring still isn't solidly here and snows remain over swaths of the nation.

The only foes that threaten America are the enemies at home, and those are ignorance, superstition, and incompetence. [Elbert Hubbard]
