  •  To my mind, they're both diseased. (0+ / 0-)

I don't think a sane, healthy mind 'chooses to organizae mass murders for fun'.

That's pretty much the definition of a truly sick, diseased mind in my books.

    •  it's a question of rational choice (2+ / 0-)

There is no indication that bin Laden lacked the ability to reason and make rational decisions of his own accord.

He chose to embrace a murderous ideology. He chose to act on it. He chose to reject civil society, and in doing so, he surrendered his claim on the rights and protections that civil society bestows upon its members.

In other words, he was just an asshole. He was not mentally ill as any legal system would define it. He just didn't give a shit.

I agree with that.  I personally have a different worldview.  And I don't suggest in the slightest that I think 'insanity' is an acceptable defense for any crime.  I basically think you have to have something wrong with your head to commit such crimes as murder.

very sound. He speaks completely coherently. This is not an insane person. This is an extremely egotistical person with a thirst for blood and personal aggrandizement, coupled with maybe a small measure of actual political grievance.

          •  I've noted that (0+ / 0-)

I agree I don't believe he meets legal definitions of insanity.  But I will also note that not every insane person 'sounds' crazy.  'Extremely egotistical with a thirst for blood and personal aggrandizement' doesn't sound sane to me though.
