      and it's true that OBL played an active role in directing a very real and dangerous organization.  But I was thinking of the symbolic side, in that "only Nixon could go to China" kind of way.

        It has been years since it had anything to do w/ the "GWOT."  Hell, from the moment that W said in fall 2002 that he wasn't worried about OBL anymore, that war basically lost any substantive purpose.

        The Pentagon doesn't want to concede that, like the Brits and the Soviets found before it, Afghanistan will not be subdued.  The WH doesn't want to alienate the Pentagon, nor does it want a perceived military defeat to occur on its watch.  The victory of getting OBL gives the WH the political cover to risk w/drawing now, but I doubt that this risk will be taken.

        That sad fact is arguably as tragic as anything that occurred on 9/11.  

        Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not?
