was done in accordance with Islamic tradition.

“Burial at sea was allowed in the case of long travel without having access to land for the fear of body deterioration,” Ahmed Nezar Kobeisy, a Medina University-trained scholar who now teaches Islamic studies at the King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, says in an e-mail.

“In this case of Osama bin Laden, the reason seems to be more political than religious.”

That's not to say that there may not have been good reasons to dispose of Osama's body at sea.  It should be noted that the same link does include statements from imams who supported the burial procedure on the grounds that they felt it was better to do it by sea than to create a place where Osama's sympathizers could use it as a shrine.  But I think it's at least questionable to say that the burial was done with respect to Islamic burial rites.

President Obama and his team did consult with Islamic clerics.  Christian preachers certainly disagree with procedures so I assume Islam would be the same.

I also have a fairly cynical feeling that because of the noise from the right, there could be clerics seeing an opportunity to feed that by saying it wasn't in accordance with their religion.

Whatever the reason, I don't expect every cleric to agree.

The WH consulted Islamic authorities and did their best.  I personally like the idea of not having the body around for Brietbart and his ilk to walk up and look at the body as they are saying they should be able to [with disrespect] or to have it as a rallying point for Islamic radicals.

President Obama did his best.  Everyone wasn't going to be happy no matter what he did about bin Laden's body.   It's a done deal and cannot be changed.
