Even Osama Bin Laden deserves a trial. The constitution -- OUR (as in, all of us) civil liberties are -- is not something that only applies to some people, some of the time. I wish more people would be a little more up in arms about what we just did, I agree it reeks of a certain hypocrisy. And please; just stop with the "we killed him because he wouldn't come quietly" line. You can't reasonably expect Osama Bin Laden of all people to come quietly, they knew they were going to kill people. Let's not spend time pretending we were there to arrest them.

From a moral and philosophical and point of view I am opposed to America enacting our version of justice in other countries. Justice means different things to different people and even when dealing with mass murderers I am inclined to say America should probably not be going in and assassinating people in other countries.

And I mean I wish people would think about what they're saying when they condone this, by doing do they are implicitly agreeing with a whole series of crazy statements; not least of which is "America is more righteous then other countries, so we have the right to go in their countries and kill who we wish". You can see how by cheering Osama's death you are in fact condoning a whole series of cascading positions which in most other light I think many here would find outrageous.

That said this isn't exactly a well written or thoughtful piece, in fact being one of those who believe Kos should be reinstating the DK3 diary standards I would probably be ripping you to shreds right now... if you hadn't have gotten... 48 HR's?! Really? Could someone please explain why this is so terrible it needs a pile on like this?

Uprated. And I rec'ed the diary as well to help cushion you from the mojo hit. But -- I will gladly repeal both if someone gives me adequate reason, I'm honestly curious why so many people hid this? Is there something incredibly offensive or inaccurate I'm somehow overlooking?

Just look at hiddens. And the user name? Come on!

For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.

    •  A trial is exactly what OBL DID NOT want. (2+ / 0-)

That's the thing about fugitives continuing to commit their crimes: they don't want a trial, they don't want a fair judge and jury....not at all, since they are guilty.  They want to get away with it.

If Osama had surrendered, he would have gotten his trial.  Instead, he sat inside a hidden, armed camp.   His choices were, first, get away with it, and second, die.   Trial wasn't in his picture.

If you want a link, I'll look for a link. If you really want it. Just ask.

    •  Thanks...I guess. (0+ / 0-)

You are the first person to address the issue without resorting to accusations of trollhood. I don't know much about the system here (I just read the stuff and haven't commented until yesterday).

      here.  Why the pile on?

I joined in because in my opinion this person is mocking DKos and/ or simply providing fodder for Fox News.  Especially based on the comments (now hidden, apparently) I believe that this individual is being sarcastic, and does not actually support the expressed opinion, but did support "extra judicial killing" when ordered by a Republican president.

Unrelated to the HR--  it is hard for me to imagine a commander in chief ordering US forces to carry out a mission this dangerous-- to kidnap bin laden out of Pakistan when the Pakistanis can not even be notified in advance of the mission-- without giving them the authority to kill him.  Would you expect him to order the special ops guys to bring him out alive no matter what?

    •  Dom, I Would Agree with the "Fair Trial" Idea . . (1+ / 0-)

If OBL was a U.S. citizen, but he's not. He's not guaranteed anything from the U.S. Constitution.

And this "diarist" is a serial troll. - a fresh alternative.
