but I thought Cain was awful -- spoke entirely in cliches.  I'm also not over the double-breasted suit.

That does not mean he didn't win the debate going away, however!  Ron Paul's schtick is wearing thin -- it was fresh in '08, somewhat, but now he seems a bit like a senile old man.  Gary Johnson sounded like he was running for OMB Director.  Rick Santorum must dye his hair.  I haven't missed him at all the last 6 years, and the use of the declaration of independence with its all men are created equal and life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to justify homophobia just left me confused.

That leaves Pawlenty.  I am beginning to think he might not become President.  If he wants to be in the upper tier of candidates, he has to own the room. He did nothing to set the agenda, just repeating anodyne talking points. Admittedly, it's hard to play to South Carolina Republicans if your goal is to be the President, not just the nominee, but he has absolutely no vision.  Even though his plan of being everyone's second choice might work, politically, he just didn't do anything to recommend himself as a leader of the free world.  His mistake wasn't just participating in the debate but by not taking any kind of stand against the crazy.  He's never going to win over the base, and it was a mistake to try. The only way to win, short of staying home, would be to talk past the audience in the theatre to moderates.  His answer to Hannity in the post-game about why it was appropriate not to desecrate bin Laden's body was the closest I saw to some sense.
