It is a BAD BAD bill- mainly what it will do is lead to the establishment of "for profit" centers where children with disabilities like Autism will go and will pretty much eliminate the entitlement children with disabilities currently have to have a free, appropriate public education.

Every bit of research shows that the best way to educate kids with disabilities is through inclusion.  It also helps kids without disabilities a great deal have that experience.

Bills like this will essentially "re-institutionalize"  kids w/disabilities.

It was an interesting coalition - a couple genuinely well-meaning Republicans who thought they were helping, and a couple who never ever voted for anything that helps families/disability issues, who were the drivers.

        •  One more question - (0+ / 0-)

Was the Kansas thing the "Special Needs Scholarship" version or the "Autism Scholarship" version?  ('cause I know ALEC has one out there that's specific to autism too.)

The autism organizations in Wisconsin have not taken a vocal position on this one so far.  It caught us by surprise, I'm afraid.  The disability coalitions are doing good work -- there was a fine article in the Capital Times yesterday -- but the number of issues to track and bills to oppose is overwhelming.

In Kansas its pretty simple - giving a school voucher to a person who lives 30 miles from the nearest town isn't really helping them.

So the rural KS people were against it.
