Barton's revisionism is indeed despicable, and something we need to hammer away at. However, he's a symptom of a disease called millenialism. A pesky virus, it has it's roots in the puritans, and it has permeated as an undercurrent in American politcs since the landing of the Mayflower. This is not to say Barton is correct; far from it. The founding fathers knew that the 1st amendment had to regulate a two-way street, that not only should the church had to be protected from the state, but also the state had to be protected from ecclestical influence. They were well aware that the puritans had committed a massacre against Quakers in the mid 17th century, and had to design the law to prevent further violence.
Anyway, this is fine work. I think I'll find my old piece on millenialism and post it soon
