    IMO the real problem with Barton is that he makes the USA a product of divine intervention rather that of the product of human progress and the application of reason to law and government.

    History, like the constitution and the Bible is whatever the conservatives say it is, at least to them.

    God is the problem, not the solution.

      When I was a kid Superman was on TV fighting for Truth, Justice and the American Way.  I always liked the sound of it.  But now to them.

      Truth= What I want to believe
      Justice= When I win
      American Way= My way

      Everybody probably saw Troutfishing's diary about Barton's appearance on The Daily Show. In that it was brought up just how hard debunking a serial liar is. It takes 500 page books, or very long diaries like this one -- kudos to the diarist for the effort.

      But for those times where we won't have an opportunity to dive into the minutiae:

      The real problem with Barton is that he makes the USA a product of divine intervention rather that of the product of human progress and the application of reason to law and government.

      That's a keeper.

        The bogus Patrick Henry quote is on every gun rights site out there.  Even the stuff Barton debunked himself are still out there.  The Washington prayer that Bachmann now has him giving at his first inauguration rather than the usual Valley Forge story was debunked completely in 1936.  Everytime I look there is another potential diary.  Like 2 books by a real Boston Tea Party militia officer, and a very interesting Washington slave story.  But I got other stuff to do too.

    •  Barton's Phd in Historical revisionism (0+ / 0-)

      Sorry, Jeremy Scahill said that line on Bill Maher, but it fits Barton to a T. What kind of "historian" mangles historical contexts of enlightenment and of religious freedom in Colonial America and presents an Orwellian version of history that didn't even take place in Bizzaro America.

        There is one where he uses 2 different speeches 3 years apart to cobble one together.  Also you would not believe what he does to Supreme Court decisions.
