based on direct math, but in many prior cases used to fill in what we don't know.

There is much creativity and imagination in science, especially theoretical physics - it then takes experimentation, observation, discussion, etc. to formulate what makes sense in reality for us to explain, model, utilized and so forth.  Some ideas don't reach maturation or even testability, let alone a converged definition, for decades.

As I noted, "faith" is a sliding scale, not necessarily black and white.  It has elements of ingenuity, imagination, hope and then blankly subscribed emotion across its range, IMHO.

Those of us in sciences or with science background need not shy away from this potential realization.

    •  I take your point about filling in the blanks, but (0+ / 0-)

again I take issue that this is based on faith, which again is all along the sliding scale a belief based on not having any evidence. There are better terms to describe this process which are still based on evidence and again I think the word trust better fills the bill. When one intuits unknowns in science it's pretty much based on some foreknowledge of what worked in the past, on presumptions that seem most reasonable, not a complete shot in the dark that doesn't extend beyond only having a 'feeling' akin to throwing a dart at a dart board. Even the more vague hypotheses that play out are still likely to be reasoned on a bunch of known stuff and people who have made those partly lucky guesses could probably spend a lot of time giving you some solid background on why they thought what they did.
