  •  Thank you for this wonderful diary (7+ / 0-)

and thank you for doing the work that you do.

Just this morning I was pondering the tragedy of forced relinquishment--which is what happened in the days before Roe v. Wade.  It's tragic for the original mother, who spends the rest of her life longing for her baby and wondering what happened to him or her, and for the child, who grows up wondering, "Why didn't she want me?"

Why, indeed.  The child knows nothing of the virulent hatred that used to be directed toward "unwed mothers."  How landlords refused to rent to them, how prospective employers shunned them, how former friends turned their backs on them.

I swallowed the Kool-Aid, believing it was best for me and my child that she be adopted by "respectable" people.  Years later when she found me we had a long, hard row of hurt feelings to work through but now we're the best of friends.  We send each other cards on Mother's Day.  Her half-brothers and my husband welcomed her into our family (although of course she has one of her own in a distant state).

She is one of the joys of my life, but what I had to endure during my pregnancy and the years afterward I wouldn't wish on a dog.  Wouldn't wish those feelings of shame and betrayal and being stigmatized on my worst enemy, in fact.
