    CD into the prison where Mandela was -- where all forms of music were forbidden.  They managed to play it over the loudspeakers -- the first time Mandela had heard music in decades.

    My first thought was, my God, how mean-spirited and vindictive and petty the jailors were.  Then I thought, no, vindictive but not petty -- they must have had some sense of how important music was to the movement, what spiritual sustenence it is.  So Mandela was cut off from that. Just one aspect of his imprisonment, but a telling one.

    What amazed me arfter his release was the serenity he had maintained, that always seems to be with him.
