my hope is the president gives a deadline for a clean debt ceiling raise, and if that doesn't occur, Do what ever is in his power to treat this issue.  Print more money, sell gold, create new coinage, what ever he can.  Do it by fiat, and dare the repugs to say it's better for the country to crash.
Put it off past the 2012 and then we'll take care of it once and for all.

    •  Declare the debt limit unconstitutional. (1+ / 0-)

If the SCOTUS says you are wrong...well we will jump off that bridge when we come to it.

        •  Time to test the 14th Amendment Section 4 (3+ / 0-)

Section 4. The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.

The administration just instructs the treasury to keep issuing debt saying that its beyond congressional power under the 14th Amendment. I would then expect a SCOTUS challenge. That would be interesting pitting the pro business side of the court against the right wing ideologues which are one and the same in some cases. Also, there would be calls for the impeachment of Obama based on alleged executive overreach which would be stopped in the Senate. Depending on how the SCOTUS rules, the debt ceiling could be dead, but in order not to kill it the court would have change its recent direction with regard to supporting the concept of the unitary executive.

          •  Actually, if you combine this with the Patriot Act (2+ / 0-)

and the President's almost unlimited power to declare someone a terrorist (i.e. someone foementing insurrection and rebellion), Boehner has provided the unassaible out to this quandry.

Obama issues a formal (secret) finding that Boehner's demands are literally terrorism and constitute an act of insurrection and rebellion threating to crash our financial markets and throw the global economy into depression and most likely widespread civil unrest and very possibly war, and ipso facto rub-a-dub-dub, the debt ceiling has just evaporated.

We'd rather dream the American Dream than fight to live it or to give it to our kids. What a shame. What an awful, awful shame.
