    "... states should be given flexibility to pursue their own plans, but that won't change the fact that he was an avowed advocate for the individual mandate" will make all the difference in the world in the "minds" of right-wingers.  People seem to forget that just because in reality some Republican (or Democrat, for that matter) had some position in the past, one that is diametrically opposed to the position he or she is now professing in order to get elected, that has no bearing on what his or her fan club will choose to believe.  If Mitt runs, just try having the "but Mitt used to favor the mandate" argument with a winger -- they'll trot out "as a states rights issue, which I approve of!" and no amount of argument from you or me will change their "minds".   So as much as I enjoy seeing people point that out over and over again to embarrass him in front of witless teabaggers, they're witless.  It has no effect.  We've always been at war with Eastasia, and, great news! The chocolate ration is *increasing" to 20 grams per week!
