    This is one thing that really burns me up.  Why does everyone admitted need to be on a PPI (for heartburn, e.g. prilosec) for 'GI prophylaxis?' Because the first person to have heartburn in the hospital and develops Barrett's and subsequently esophageal cancer can sue everyone involved in her hospital stay, and win.  So we write pantoprazole 40 QD for everyone because it's way cheaper than losing your livelihood/shutting down the hospital when plaintiff's counsel takes you for 40 million.

      I'm unaware of cancer prevention cases getting $40 million awards. I'd like to know more.
