It's Reading First, which was a dismal failure, on steroids.  And who would stand to benefit from this bill.  Another Bill, Bill Gates, who stands to make millions/billions off the software.

Please read what Stephen Krashen says about the LEARN Act and then encourage congress to vote against it.

Reading First for primary children was torture enough.  But a phonemic awareness program for k-12 would be a disaster.

Instead more books, more libraries, more librarians.  Watch the entire video if you have the time, but if you're pressed, start at about the 18 minute mark.

I couldn't get the video to play and for some reason Stephan Krashen's post on the LEARN Act has disappeared at the Schools Matter blog. But I found this pdf of his critique of LEARN: http://bit.ly/....

I agree that Reading First is not something we want brought back. Research shows that its results were mixed at best. And at worst, it made Neil Bush piles of cash.

Krashen's criticisms of LEARN are well founded, and I was perhaps too quick to endorse it. Maybe I'm guilty of straining too hard to find some sign of sanity?
