    You have to buy a bike permit to take a bike on the ferry. It's less than a car fare, more than a passenger fare. I don't think it is too onerous but you definitely have to get one. I am not 100% sure about whether the permit to take a bike on the bus (there is a rack on the front here too, that holds 3 bikes) costs money or not but from signage in the areas where one purchases a monthly bus pass, I believe that (a) a permit is required and (b) it costs money. There are areas of Seattle, downtown mostly, where the bus is free to everyone, and bikes are not permitted on buses in that area at all.
