We would have won in 1968 if we didn't have a disastrous primary and convention.  We did win in 2000 but our political institutions obviously failed with the electoral college and Bush v. Gore.  That aside however, I think that the economy won't have incredibly strong growth (5% GDP per year) to guarantee another Democratic term in 2016.  Plus we'll have the media going apeshit about how 'real murika' is tired of Democrats.  And the Republican bench will be somewhat replenished with people like Marco Rubio, Susana Martinez, Tom Corbett, Jeb Bush, etc. etc.

Now I don't think a Republican win in 2016 ensures they win Wisconsin, but it will definitely help Ron Johnson and I would love to have an excellent candidate against him since he is certainly vulnerable.  So it really comes down to if we want to run our strongest candidate, Ron Kind, this cycle or in 2016, and I think he should wait because a generic Dem is certainly favored for an open seat this cycle and for reelection in 2018 with a first term Republican president.

This is waaaay premature, but I could live with Huntsman as president - especially if we could have a Dem Congress (at least one house).

Anyway, agreed about the historical trend, but keep in mind that current projections actually have the economy quite good in 2016. It's just a long hard slog to get there. Ironically, though, as long as Obama can get reelected, that may put Democrats in a solid position for 2016.

      •  Agreed, especially if there's a Democratic Senate (1+ / 0-)

I'd really, really love to see a Huntsman vs. Schweitzer debate. Both of them would probably spend about half the time poking fun at themselves and the other half saying, "No, but seriously, I believe..."

        •  I'm sorry, but (0+ / 0-)

that thought is for some reason revolting to me.

I think a lot of politicians think way too highly of themselves and take themselves way too seriously. I think Gov. Schweitzer and Jon Huntsman, Jr., are more easygoing and self-deprecating than your average bear.
