  •  This doesn't sound right: (11+ / 0-)
For example, imagine if there had been a Shirley Sherrod speaking for the 4000 Cajun farmers in Louisiana who are now about to have their entire year's crops deluged by Mississippi runoff after the floodgates were opened this weekend, just so Exxon Mobil Company doesn't have to worry about getting damp.

If the NYT is correct, it wasn't only about the oil companies...it was damage mitigation for the downriver cities.  Better to flood the, well, flood plains than to drown Baton Rouge and (again) New Orleans.

Agreed that the farmers will be hurting b/c they will lose a year of crops.  What they will gain is better, more nutrient-rich soil next year.  This is why people farm in flood plains, after all: the soil is enriched, every year, by the flood waters.

Just ask the ancient Egyptians.  Or a farmer in the most fertile lands of PA.

and the lauding of "contractor-dom" for someone who had permanent employment and benefits seems a bit weird as well.  That may be a mixed bag.  The benefits of flooding to farmland may be a mixed bag as well.  These waters are gong to contain a lot of things unheard of to the ancient Egyptians -  pesticide and chemical fertilizer runoff from the farms upstream, sewage, and other unnatural contents.  I think they're also predicting a much larger dead zone in the delta due to all the algae bloom from excess nitrogen.

      •  Well, you're probably correct. (0+ / 0-)

Zebra mussels are an invasive species.  But sometimes there are silver linings to black clouds: zebra mussels also filter out the pollution in water.  And b/c they're invasive, there are  a lot of them available to act as filters.

I'm not saying it's a good thing to have the Hudson overrun by zebra mussels...

but it is surely not a bad thing to have the Hudson purified.

Now if we could only purify the East River....
