    The people's houses would have been flooded anyway.  This way, it is done in a controlled manner to prevent a disaster that many say would be worse than the flooding caused by Katrina.

    Besides that, all of those farmers were informed, yearly, of the risks of where they lived and knew that in case of flood their area would be a designated outlet for flood waters to prevent a wider catastrophe.

    It's one thing to empathize with the plight of the farmers, it's quite another to buy into the "evil big guv'mint" rhetoric about the decision, which undoubtedly was not an easy one for those who had to make it.  It's easy to be an armchair expert, isn't it?
