  •  A patient of mine (10+ / 0-)

recently came out to her fundie mother and it is  uuuuuuugly. Her response, as a Christian herself, was to seek out the local UU church, where the minister is a happily married lesbian. I sure hope it helps her.

    •  I don't think anything at all (5+ / 0-)

of gay clergy. Of course I belong to a denomination that fully embraces gay people.

When I was organist at St. John's in Boston, I played for the blessing of our Rector's marriage to his partner. His partner sang in my choir. Strangely, he was from Iowa. Gorgeous, too!

It wasn't strange to anyone in the parish at all that Fr. Steve should marry his partner.

Thank God for the Episcopal Church and all those other denominations that accept us just the way the good lord made us (and I mean that in a very, very loose sense, the "made" part, I'm not creationist).

    •  One other thing: (7+ / 0-)

It's a damned shame all anyone hears about are the monstrous things fundies do and the large numbers of quiet, accepting, liberal Christians and Jews and what they are up to never seems to get any thought at all, let alone any press.

That your friend had someone to go to, that UU pastor, THAT should be NEWS.

      •  She will be all right (4+ / 0-)

once she fledges out and gives her mother's opinion the minimal attention it deserves.  I felt bad when she explained her internal conflict with her fundamental religion and her basic nature. She's still thinking in terms of hellfire.

She and her girlfriend had already talked about the local UU church. I said, "Hey, the minister's a lesbian; she'll really be able to help you, I'll bet."  "I know," she said, grinning.  I'd heard that pastor speak at a friend's funeral, and if I cared much about belonging to a flock, I'd join hers.  Such a powerful, philosophical woman.

Wisconsin is often characterized as a "civilized" place—or at least it used to be.  But we have as many or more rednecks as anywhere else. A couple of years ago, a homosexual young man was beaten to death because he was gay . . . just miles from my house. That sort of thing is not trumpeted the way Matthew Shepherd's death was.
