  •  That's possible (0+ / 0-)

He could turn out to be the Dick Thornburgh of this senate goround.  Time may have passed him by.  But it's just as possible that it hasn't, and his name recognition and record will be a plus.  Who would you rather run against:  Neumann, a Fitzgerald, or Thompson?

An update on the candidate situation though - Marc Ambinder just retweeted this from CNBC's Becky Quick: "Rep. Paul Ryan just told @Squawk he will announce re: his future today. He will call friends & family 1st. Sounds like he is running"

What would this mean for the national framing of the Ryan budget plan? I think it would be hard for President Obama to appear to be running against a Senate candidate in Wisconsin when he's actually running for reelection.

Um, of course, Ryan doesn't necessarily have to be announcing that he's running for Senate.

      •  Could be a simple Huckabee situation, though. (1+ / 0-)

        •  possibly (0+ / 0-)

but does ryan disdain the media the way huckabee does?  from his letter to his announcement it was obvious that he did not care for the media and may have made the letter the way he did just to prove that he can't be predicted as easily as we thought. even though it was obvious he wasn't running.

Between Quick and Rep. Ryan, and we don't know how astute Quick is at reading between the lines. It could have been something like Rep. Ryan saying, "Hey, when I'm on the show later, I'll announce my decision about whether I'll seek higher office, but I don't want to preview it before I call my folks," and Quick assuming, "OMG, he's gonna run!" which is obviously premature, or it could have been him saying, "I'm going to have a huge announcement, but I want my friends and family to be the first to know before I pull the trigger on live TV," in which case it would be entirely logical for Quick to make that assumption.

      •  And Major Garrett reports... (6+ / 0-)

Rep. Ryan will not seek Sen. Kohl's seat, but Thompson will. Story here, courtesy of the National Journal:

Three GOP sources tell National Journal as soon as Ryan officially announces he won't run for the Senate, former Wisconsin GOP Gov. Tommy Thompson, is expected to announce his candidacy for the Senate seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl, who recently announced he was retiring.

        I think this is good.

        That's a pretty safe bet.
