That is generally as much a function of the legal limits on how long a person can be held against their will as it is the person's insurance or financial resources.

    •  Yes, I realize that, but that's another (1+ / 0-)

part of the problem. No she didn't want to stay, she didn't want treatment, but she was/is not mentally competent to make rational choices. I spoke at length with her case worker and her public defender about having a formal evaluation done through the courts to get her admitted to St Elizabeth's but according to them, that would be worse than if she were doomed to life on the street. St Es apparently would warehouse her and she might not get out for a year or more.

So I dropped that idea, but I will not accept that life on the street is any kind of life for her so I live day to day hoping the building manager doesn't find out she's living with me until I can see if there is a better option that social services find for her.

And here's another thing that's messed up. If I had never met her, if I had never heard her personal story, if my heart hadn't been broken after knowing how shitty her life has been, I wouldn't have taken her in in the first place. She'd be just another homeless crackhead tranny on the streets of DC and I wouldn't lose a wink of sleep over her.

It's not like I had no prior compassion for people like her, but I wouldn't have risked everything to help someone like her if I had known the hell it would put me through. Now I'm on the hook and can't let go because I'd carry crushing guilt to my grave.

Ds see human suffering and wonder what they can do to relieve it. Rs see human suffering and wonder how they can profit from it.
