Most people who are in prison do not come from the sector of society that is likely to vote Republican. So, maximizing incarceration and creating as many state laws as possible that forever deny voting privileges to anyone convicted of more than a misdemeanor, is a fundamental part of the Republican voter suppression strategy, along with voter ID, denial of voting to college kids, all forms of caging, and making registration and early voting much more difficult. (Not to mention outright fraud, including the use of voting machines susceptible to vote stealing without paper trails.)

If you're a Republican, you love CCA and Wackenhut, and for reasons above and beyond loving having everything privatized and for profit.
