about California. We have quite a pernicious history of Republican governors, despite being a "blue" state.

name of Brown, CA has had like 2 Democratic governors in the past 100 years. That's just a guess, not a fact. I guess it could, possibly, be a fact. That's all I'm willing to commit to.

I'm in the I-fucking-love-this-guy wing of the Democratic Party!

Saw an interesting op-ed piece during Schwarzenegger's tenure. I think the author was a member of the Green Party or something. He pointed out that Schwarzenegger (sic) really made him nostalgic for Pete Wilson, because at least Wilson was able to work Sacramento. He could get a budget through the legislature. He did it by twisting arms and getting concessions, both from the people who wanted to raise taxes, and from those who wanted to cut services. Nobody was thrilled in the end, but at least it was a budget. Schwarzenegger's muscle poses were hot, I guess (the reason a lot of people voted for him), but under Schwarzenegger, all we ever saw was gridlock. You want somebody with the right ideology. Just as important, you want somebody with smarts about how to get things done, and chops.

Since 1898, only four Democrats have been elected California governor: Culbert Olson, Gray Davis, and Pat and Jerry Brown.

However, the state did once have a progressive Republican tradition that was shared by many, though not all, GOP governors prior to Reagan.  Among them were Hiram Johnson (TR's 1912 running mate and later a pro-New Deal, though isolationist, senator) and Earl Warren (well known as a great chief justice, but even as governor Harry Truman said of him "He's a Democrat--and doesn't know it).
