I remember reading that owners of these private prisons are also major lobbyists for tougher sentences.  Big surprise, huh?

    •  Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and Geo (21+ / 0-)

Group are number one and two in private prison operations in the world.  They are members of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).  ALEC consists of 2,400 Conservative legislators and the top 300+ U.S. Corporations.  Since 1980 they have been responsible for enactment of: 3 strike laws, Truth in Sentencing (TIS) laws (mandatory serving of 85% of sentence given), mandatory minimum drug and gun laws and abolishing Parole.

All of these laws were written by ALEC and passed along to the states to enact.  Passage ensured high incarceration rates to CCA and Geo - who helped write the damn legislation.  With crime rates declining over the past decade they were losing money and that is why they decided to go after illegal immigrant detention.  They secured U.S. contracts to house them, wrote SB 1070 to allow police to stop them and apprehend those without documentation, and for each filled bed they receive $70,000.00 per year in tax paid fees.
