    What IMO needs to be "tempered" is the recent concept of the throw-away relationship. In a world where you can trade in your old Barbie doll towards a new one, where is the ideal of loyalty to the old, of treasuring someone even when all the fur has been loved off (Velveteen Rabbit, in case that reference is not familiar). Lifelong partnership seems to be thought of as an oddity, or an unattainable goal, such that people give up with a shrug. They even seem to start with that shrug, giving up on the "lifelong" idea before they even begin.
