The Rubes are willing to take the short-term political hit to put their long-term policy objective into play.   The more often gutting Medicare gets into the discourse, the more "reasonable" and "centrist" it will come to sound.  Soon enough "thoughtful, moderate" Dems will join in the "pragmatic search for alternatives to Medicare" because the Rubes took this hit now.  They'll keep coming back to it again and again until they've sufficiently moved the discourse that anyone opposed to eliminating Medicare is seen as an extreme left ideological obstructionist, "Kucinich ugh!"

but I fear you are correct.  We're already seeing some blue dogs talk about the need to cut medicare and SS, how long before this becomes entrenched in conventional wisdom?  Especially with corporate media continuing to push the meme.
